Calculate Your Missed Prayers — How Many Years?

Knowing your prayer debt is the first step toward a structured make-up plan. This guide covers estimation methods, formulas, women's exemptions, and practical examples.

Why Calculate?

Calculating your missed prayer debt forms the foundation of a structured recovery plan. While knowing the exact number may not be possible, even an approximate estimate boosts motivation and makes tracking progress much easier.

Scholars note that knowing the exact count is not mandatory, but making an estimate with a margin of caution is recommended. A “prevailing estimate” (ghalib al-zann) is sufficient.

Basic Formula

The simplest calculation follows this formula:

Total Debt = Missed Years x 365 x Daily Prayer Count x (1 - Consistency Ratio)

  • Missed years: From puberty (or the date you became Muslim) to when you started praying regularly.
  • Daily prayer count: 5 for fard prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha). Add Witr for 6 if following the Hanafi school.
  • Consistency ratio: An estimate of how regularly you prayed during that period. 0% if you never prayed, 50% if you prayed roughly half the time.

Period-Based Estimation

Your prayer habits likely changed throughout your life. Dividing your history into periods gives a more accurate estimate:

  • Puberty to 18: Most people are irregular. Typical consistency: 0-20%.
  • 18-25: University and early career years. Varies widely, 10-50% is common.
  • 25+: Many people become more consistent.

Kaza Defteri lets you enter each period separately with its own consistency ratio, producing a more realistic estimate.

Exemption for Women

Women are not obligated to pray during menstruation (hayd). Prayers during this time do not need to be made up. The calculation adjusts as follows:

Yearly Exemption = Average Period Days x 12 x 5 prayers

Average 6 days/month x 12 months = 72 days x 5 = 360 prayers/year exemption

Period duration varies (3-10 days). Using your own average gives more accurate results. Our app calculates this automatically based on gender settings.

Witr Prayer Calculation

In the Hanafi school, Witr is wajib (necessary) and must be made up, making the daily count 6 instead of 5. In the Shafi'i school, Witr is sunnah and is not included in the debt calculation.

Practical Example

Example calculation for a male:

Puberty age: 12

Started praying regularly: 28

Total missed years: 16

Period 1 (12-18): 6 years, 5% consistency = 6 x 365 x 6 x 0.95 = 12,483 prayers

Period 2 (18-24): 6 years, 30% consistency = 6 x 365 x 6 x 0.70 = 9,198 prayers

Period 3 (24-28): 4 years, 60% consistency = 4 x 365 x 6 x 0.40 = 3,504 prayers

Estimated total: ~25,185 prayers

Manual Adjustments

Estimates will never be exact. It is recommended to add a margin of caution:

  • For uncertain periods, keep the consistency ratio on the low side.
  • Round up the total — praying extra does no harm, while leaving debt unpaid does.
  • In Kaza Defteri, you can manually adjust the total for each prayer type.

Digital Calculator Tool

Kaza Defteri performs all the above calculations automatically. You just need to enter your periods and consistency ratios:

  • Define multiple life periods
  • Automatic menstrual exemption for women
  • Witr included/excluded option
  • Manual adjustment capability
  • Progress tracking with estimated completion date

Frequently Asked Questions

Is knowing the exact number mandatory?

No. Most scholars agree that a prevailing estimate is sufficient. It may not be possible to know the exact count.

What if I overestimate?

Extra prayers made up beyond your actual debt count as voluntary (nafl) prayers. Overestimating causes no harm.

Are prayers missed as a child considered debt?

No. Prayers before puberty are not considered debt. The calculation starts from the age of puberty.

Can I make up more during Ramadan?

Absolutely. Ramadan's blessed atmosphere is a great opportunity for making up prayers. But don't forget about your fasting debt as well.
